LGBTQ: Updates (prior to 7/1/17)

OLDER UPDATES 6/26: Supreme Court orders states to list same-sex parents on birth certificates. Gorsuch dissents. 6/11: LGBTQ marches all over the country today! 5/15: In TX, it's an all-out assault on gay people (Jervits, USA Today). 5/4: Trump signed a "religious liberty" intentional directive, which appears to give religioius organizations the right to discriminate based on sexual orientation. (CNN) 3/29: Trump signed an EO rescinding Obama's EO 13672 protections for LGBTQ workers (federal contractors will not have to provide documentation about their workplace policies) (NBC News), despite having said, on 1/26, he would not do this (The White House). 3/13: Waves of vandalism, violence hitting LGBTQ centers nationwide (NBC News). 3/6: The Supreme Court has decided NOT to decide whether federal anti-discrimination law gives trans student, Gavin Grimm, the right to use the boy's bathroom. They've returned the case to a lower court in Virginia. (CBS News) 2/22: "A fight over an order that would rescind protections for transgender students in public schools has erupted inside the Trump administration, pitting Attorney General Jeff Sessions against the secretary of education, Betsy DeVos" (NY Times) (see Take Action, below; see also Education section). 2/10: Atty. General Sessions plans to halt Obama protections for trans students. Sessions is for the so-called First Amendment Defense Act (see below). 2/4: Huge Stonewall rally in New York City (see photo below)!1/31: Trump's SCOTUS pick is opposed by the Human Rights Council: "[Trump] has nominated Judge Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, fulfilling his campaign promise to nominate a justice in the mold of Antonin Scalia, one of the most vehemently anti-LGBTQ justices to ever sit on the court who once went so far as to compare gay people to murderers."
